Author Gossip(2) and Cover Coveting(17)

As a reader I always want the download on what's going on with authors. Do they have new books coming out, how the latest tour going, any thing juicy! So, I decided to bring the news to my readers. I'm lurking around all of those author blogs anyway, might as well do something productive.

The Way of Kings (Stormlight Archive)H

ave you ever wished that you could get your name adapted into one of your favorite authors books?  Well apparently the wonderful Brandon Sanderson has been working in a few fan names into THE GATHERING STORM and TOWERS OF MIDNIGHT, and soon A MEMORY OF LIGHT. So now is your chance to get your name worked into the next Stormlight Archive book.  Of course it’s likely only going to be a variation of your name, but that’s still awesome!

There's a charity auction for naming rights going on right now at eBay, with a final bell Saturday evening at 9:30 p.m. Mountain time. Proceeds will benefit the local science fiction and fantasy symposium, called Life, the Universe, and Everything (LTUE). (Author Post)

ParanormalcyF

or those of you follow me (Keirsten White) on twitter or facebook, you already know the super cool news that a director is attached to Paranormalcy! Scott Winant, who has several Emmys and esteemed television and cable series to his name, is on board as director. They're still looking for a screenwriter which, in all honesty, makes me very happy. I've been so thrilled with Paranormalcy's production team because they're really determined not just to try and get it made, but to get it made in the best possible way. So, yay for exciting movie news! As always this doesn't mean it will get made (if you think getting a book published is hard, just look at how many things have to happen to get a movie made, holy crap y'all), but it's one more step there!

Also, just so you know if it does get made as a movie, I won't have any say in casting. And although my friend and fellow author Cindy Pon wants to start a petition to have me play Evie, I see myself more as the hag. Scott? Hag? Please? I can send you headshots! I'll have them taken when I'm writing on deadline and not showering or sleeping. I'm a shoe-in. (Author Post)

Wow-ee!! Loads of hot covers to catch up on!

Soulless by Gail Carriger

Source:  Gail Carriger

Shera’s Thoughts:  It’s stunning!!  The art work practically glows of the computer screen.  Sure the lady on the cover clearly looks Japanese and the main character is not, it works for this cover!  Go Japan!

Author’s Thoughts:

In other news my Japanese cover has been released. This is not the manga but the translation of the first book, Soulless

US version:
Soulless (The Parasol Protectorate)

Fate’s Edge by Ilona Andrews

Source:  Ilona Andrews’ blog

Shera’s Thoughts:  Stunning, I think I like it even more then the other covers.  The guys fading into the background always annoy me, but for this cover I think they finally got it.  The cover is definitely more docile.  (Can covers be docile?)

Author’s Thoughts:

Here is a snippet from FATE'S EDGE to go with the cover.

Previous Books:

On the Edge (The Edge, Book 1)Bayou Moon (The Edge, Book 2)

The Alloy of Law by Brandon

Sanderson

Source:  Author’s Blog

Shera’s Thoughts:  Really beautiful.  Sure there are a lot of EF covers with white covers and pretty smoke on them, but this one is centered on the two.  Makes me want to try out some of Sanderson’s work.

Authors Thoughts:

If you're in the UK, Australia, or New Zealand and have been wondering how the cover art of Gollancz's version of the next Mistborn book will appear, look no further.

US version:
The Alloy of Law: A Mistborn Novel

Heart of Darkness by Lauren

Dane

Source:  goodreads

Shera’s Thoughts:  It’s not really wonderful.  However, it grows on you.  The background is like a mystery eluding the eye and coming back to the leading lady.

Author’s Thoughts:

Just wanted to pop in before heading out to breakfast and then the first workshop of the day to say hello! I hope everyone is having a great week :) Here in Los Angeles RT is in full swing and crazy busy and fun. But I got my new cover for Heart of Darkness and I wanted to post it cause it's so pretty!

Blood Rules by Christine Cody

Source:  Wicked Scribes

Shera’s Thoughts:  The two covers go well together.  Though I like the wind swept look better on the first one.  Somehow Blood Rules doesn’t have as much a dystopia feel as the first.  Still looks amazing!

Bloodlands (A Novel of the Bloodlands)

One Salt Sea by Seanan McGuire

Shera’s Thoughts:  Wow it is so amazing!!  This cover takes a nice turn from the dark covers of the first four books.  The way her hair is fanned out and her pose is so alluring.

Dearly Departed by Lia Habel

Shera’s Thoughts:  They’re is just something about dystopias and parasols.  They go hand in hand, and in most cases they look great.  In this case the cover just rocks my boat!!

Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep

Source:  ATUF

Shera’s Thoughts:  Sure I’ll be the first to admit that the old cover felt more targeted to independent readers then YA and adults.  However, I really like the polished look.  It was like going back to Hogwarts.

So I can see where they’re trying to take the new cover.  Hopefully this isn’t the final version because the two images do not mix well.

Author’s Thoughts:

I like both covers, but I think the girl cover is a better fit for the book/series. To me, it’s a little hipper and edgier and says young adult urban fantasy more than the gargoyle cover did.

Old Cover:

Cat Tales by Faith Hunter

Source:  ATUF

Shera’s Thoughts:  Love these covers.  They are the ultimate of a badass woman.  Each one shows her ready to kick something's face in and I love how the background has an old west feel to it.  Plus, her hair is wild.  All of the other covers her hair is just to perfectly in place.

Author’s Thoughts:

I am so freaking psyched! I have been on pins and needles waiting for the new Jane Yellowrock short story book cover. And here it is! I am drooling!

Shera’s Thoughts: Still can not see what the fuss is about these covers. Yeah, a girls face on a cover. Nothing special. The branches on the bottom are cool, and the hair being out of the way let's us notice them more. Still, can we think outside of the box please?

Isle of Night by Veronica Wolef

Source:  ATUF

Shera’s Thoughts:  Big heads on covers just don’t do it for me, most of the time.  In this case it works.  Sure at first my eyes thought “Holy crap, those are big heads!!”  Soon you can appreciate them though, plus the blue tones work well.

A Demon Does it Better

Source:  ATUF

Shera’s Thoughts:  This series has awesome covers.  Just love how this one is on fire from the last cover being all icy blues. Plus the lady on the cover just has a wicked pose.

Wolf at the Door by Mary Janice

Davidson

Shera’s Thoughts:  This author will never stop.  She is a one woman writing machine.

Back to books. This cartoony look is cute, but bring your eyes to the wolfy shadow.  How kwel is that?  The frame around the cover is also cool.  Love that the text matches her skirt.

Fury by Elizabeth Miles

Source:  ATUF

Shera’s Thoughts:  Love, love, love it!!!  Furies really are making tracks in the UF world, and this cover is definitely a testament to our fascination with them.  Her hair is gorgeous, I’m almost tempted to forget that I look terrible with read hair and go get it dyed.

Blood Rights by Kristen Painter

Shera’s Thoughts:   . . .

Freaking amazing!!!  This surpasses all other covers!!

Author’s Thoughts:

Three covers at once is a lot to ask out of an illustrator, but damn, it looks so good all out together on the shelves. Luckily Nekro was up to the challenge. We definitely drove him through the ringer getting the perfect look for the series and for Chrysabelle, our heroine, but his signature black & red work just perfectly sets off her gold signum… – Orbit Creative Director Laura Panepinto

Shera’s Thoughts:  Who new business suits could look so kickass.  The lady kind of reminds me of that chick from Fringe, but not creepy.
